Stationary Identity

A function of the attention economy (real–estate and not plumbers) is that our actions, messages, and social activity are captured in a reservoir of data . From a quantified-self perspective this can be positive, allowing us to recall places we visited, or find someone we met in a conference. But it also has a deep effect on our cognitive development.

As we grow, and transform – we might make mistakes, say things we regret, change our opinions. With our actions captured in the repositories all over the internet self–transformation can become impossible. This is not because of an external scolding, but because of (false) self belief that whatever we put into our identity ledger becomes forever part of who we are.

Being able to raise about these questions, requires a very strong sense of emotional articulation, and individualism. How can we train young people to develop such skills?
